In this 2.5-hour workshop, participants will learn the basics of sashiko stitching and visible mending. Sashiko stitching is a traditional Japanese technique that is ideal for creating decorative patterns, practical mending of clothing and home goods, and hand-quilting. We will also discuss the history of sashiko and how it applies to modern life and craft.
We will examine a variety of traditional sashiko patterns and participants will be provided with sashiko thread and needles to experiment with stitching these patterns on fabric. Participants are also asked to bring a pair of jeans, an item of clothing, or a home textile that could use some sprucing up to practice visible mending techniques during the workshop.
