Indigo Moons Quilt

Indigo Moons Quilt

The Indigo Moons Quilt is a one-of-a-kind throw sized piece, approx 56 in x 58 in (nearly 5ft x 5ft). It is largely made with pieces of fabric left over from other projects. Repurposing remnant pieces is one way the studio stays as close to zero waste as possible.

The quilt is made mostly with Essex cotton/linen. The textiles used for the quilt were all hand dyed in studio using plant-based natural dyes. The front of the quilt features indigo moons created with a shibori resist technique. The varying greys on the front and back of the quilt are from a range of natural dyes including logwood, Himalayan rhubarb, myrobalan and iron salts.

The front and back of the quilt were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, were entirely done by hand with cotton sashiko thread dyed grey with natural dyes. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine.

The binding is a mix of indigos and greys and was also sewn by hand.

The quilt has 100% cotton batting which gives it a nice weight for spring. It is functional but can also be displayed as a piece of art.

Care: Hand wash in a tub with a gentle detergent and dry flat or on a line or the quilt can be professionally cleaned. This piece should be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.
